UNAM to Begin Construction in San Miguel

San Miguel de Allende will be the second city outside of the Mexican capital to house a campus of the country’s leading academic institution. The National Autonomous University of Mexico will be building the Ciudad del Conocimiento, or the “City of Knowledge,” and construction is scheduled to begin within coming weeks.

The project also includes Guanajuato’s first UNAM preparatory school as well as a department of continuing education studies, which will offer certificate programs and seminars.

Mayor Mauricio Trejo Pureco has confirmed that the proposal to donate between 6 and 9 hectares of land within the region will be submitted to San Miguel’s town council before Holy Week. This plot of land will be used to house what will become the region’s most important university facilities, providing space for academic research and offering higher education to sanmiguelenses.

According to the mayor, the paperwork has been submitted; all that is required is a bit of time for processing. “Our plan is to have everything finalized before Semana Santa, so that we can all go on vacation knowing that the project is on well underway. It is important for us to keep our word. We are about results and nothing can stand in our way,” the mayor proclaimed.

Last June, the nation’s leading university arrived in San Miguel de Allende to offer academic programs and continuing education courses. After several months of sharing facilities with the Casa de la Cultura on Mesones, the National Autonomous University of Mexico is soon to begin construction of its own facilities within the city
