Toys play an essential role in our lives, inspiring us to create fantasy worlds in which the imagination and creativity come to life.
On the top floor of La Esquina Mexican Folk Toy Museum, there is a stunning collection of traditional award-winning toys made from cardboard, wood, clay and other natural fibers.
The National Mexican Folk Toy Competition took place during the month of September in 2013, on the occasion of the museum’s third anniversary.
Conducted in collaboration with the National Fund for Promoting Arts and Crafts (FONART), the main goal behind the contest is to celebrate toys and to revive an appreciation for these craftsmen and their valuable work.
Prior to being exhibited at La Esquina, these folk toys were first displayed at the Guanajuato Bicentennial Park, between September 2013 and February 2014, during which time over 55,000 people have been able to admire these pieces.
In response to high demand, the museum has designated a permanent space in the building to exhibit these pieces. Here you will find wooden helicopters, a choo-choo train made from gourd and wooden whistles in the shape of fish, among many more charming and colorful traditional toys.
A symbol of the determination, perseverance and craftsmanship of Mexican artisans, this collection can be found, today, right here in San Miguel de Allende, at the La Esquina Mexican Folk Toy Museum located at Calle de Núñez No. 40 and will be on display until the month of September.
