For 17 years, a group of San Miguel locals has gathered on the first Thursday of every month with no other plan than to meet with friends and exchange experiences, trivia and points of view. One of the group’s founders, Luis Ferro de la Sota, says that before the “Thursday Group” existed, this group of friends would meet at the old Sports Club located in town at the corner of Mesones and Hidalgo.
“We would meet there just to get together, but when the Sports Club closed down, we were left stranded. But our friendship prevailed, and here we are.”
Currently the group is divided into 12 sub-groups, and every month, each group is in charge of finding a place to meet and provide the “snacks,” which generally are more along the lines of a fullcourse meal.
February’s gathering was held at the former horsebreeding ranch, best known as “The Clock,” given the clock tower that stands outside the facility, located on Salida a Querétaro. Benigno Torres led the group.
Neither politics nor business is discussed at the gatherings, which bring together some 100 old-timers.
“The only motive for the powwow is to be together,” asserts Luis Ferro de la Sota.
